Rick and Morty - Lawnmower Dog

I received a last minute request to put a cover together for Animation magazine featuring a story on Rick and Morty. This was based on a scene boarded by Juan MezaLeon in a future episode, a bg by Jeff Mertz that was colored by Jason Boesch. I had to recompose our existing demon characters (can anyone recognize them?) which set the tone for Rick and Mortys attitude expression, can't wait to hold it! Next is Snuffles, Mortys dog, who becomes Snowball in the exoskeleton who takes over the world in order to castrate the human race. Snowball was one of the first designs I did along with this walk cycle. The bg sketch was an early concept drawing I did for Snowballs palace that was almost cut from the show. The original Snuffles was based on Justin Roilands 3 pups who joined us most of every day in the office. Next is Scary Terry, a legally safe knock off of Freddy Krueger, they even joke about it in the episode. The one on the left is the first drawing I did for R+M. We had to change his knife hands into small swords to achieve part of the safe knock off. I suggested the idea to give him a testicle chin that would undulate as he talks.

RICK and MORTY - CTHULU!!!

Introducing CTHULU!!! This is a design I did for the Rick and Morty opening title sequence, which turned out to be one of the trickier scenes of the season to nail down. I was so excited to work on this mythical creature and really wanted to finesse it as much as time allowed us since it appears in every episode. The beak mouth on the second page I referenced an Octopus mouth and was shocked to find how their mouths really worked, so for our Cthulu this is whats revealed underneath all those tentacles as Cthulu comes flying into screen trying to grab Rick and Morty. I created a profile and front flight cycle to make it easier on the animator but the animator didn't seem to follow the board posing and all that we gave him and had kind of dropped the ball to those involved, still looks great, but can always be better, hopefully if theres a season 2 we can fine tune it. For the color we wanted it to feel like it had this evil inner glow existing inside that propels it. The Cthulu holding Rick and Morty is a special pose I did as my departure drawing to the rest of the existing crew on my last day there, (the actual drawing was much more phallic). The show premiered last night on Adult Swim and am so happy that the crew can finally enjoy all the hard work put into this beast of a show and share it with the world. So proud.

Flying Primates

I designed this character a few months back and was waiting for a window of time to be able to do a 3d paint exercise with it...him...her? and loved the outcome. Not exactly traditional Halloween fare, but I really enjoyed creating a mythical creature concept out of a bat, baboon, and a moose - MooseFeratu Bat! - with an Abe Lincoln beard to boot. Happy Halloween!

October Birthdays

May seem a little too cute sitting on top of scary monster promo art, but hey what the heck. I just did this quick piece of my infant son to print out for all the October birthdays coming up. Making grandmas happy :)

Irons in the fire

It's been awhile since my last posting but all for good reason. I've been Art Directing the much anticipated new series for Adult Swim called "Rick and Morty" and had my first son in May so its been a good yet crazy year so far! The first image is teaser promo art I put together for the show which premieres in December. The image later became the art for our billboards in LA, Atlanta, and NYC.   There will be more on this later once the show has aired, can't wait!! Before working on Rick and Morty, I went out on the story pitch trail to try my luck out at the networks. The next piece is a character lineup I did from one of the shows I helped develop called "Alien Admissions"- a workplace comedy set at a storefront language and culture school that teaches alien immigrants how to be Americans. The third image is for another show I helped develop called "Love on the Air" - it follows the story of Rodge Morris, Marin County's most romantic DJ that could use a little love. Single for the first time in his life at age 36, soft-rock DJ Rodge Morris finds his naively romantic notions of the world leave him unprepared for the harsh realities of 21rst- Century bachelor life.
